Something you might know but unaware of..

HAhahaa.. DUe to my laziness, business, lameness, and many many more.. I decided to post my take home essay.. Written by me... hehehe.. I thought the topic was quite interesting for students to know.. However, my essay kinda sucks.. So please don mind my usage of lame words, incorrect grammar, etc.

Take Home Essay: Is Knowledge The Most Important?

“I have covered the entire chapter on Newton’s laws. Go home and try to solve the problems that I have assigned to you,” said a Physics lecturer to his students. The solutions to the homework problems assigned by professors in college are usually not obvious and distinct from the example problems discussed in class. However, the governing laws and theories in homework assignments are the same as what is taught in class. The purpose of assigning problems that require students to use a slightly different approach is to let students tackle problems with some creativity of their own, and not just following the exact procedures taught in class. However, colleges are offering less experimenting freedom to students with their well-structured courses that the faculties believe would help students learn the most out of these courses and therefore I agree with both Thoreau and Cory that learning something is more than just gaining knowledge on the subject because of the significance of people in gaining the right attitudes and skills in problem solving and hands-on personal experience.

In the passage written by H.D. Thoreau, the author argues that hands-on experience is more important than studying a subject from afar. Thoreau asserts that people are only studying facts and knowledge that are proved by scientists, but not learning from any experiments on the subject by themselves. Similarly, in the passage written by William Cory, the author argues that skills and behaviors that people learned in school are more important than the knowledge gained from studying. Cory believes that the purpose of going to school is to learn certain skills and behaviors. The author lists a number of skills and attitudes, described as “art” and “habits” respectively in the passage, acquired in school. Finally, Cory asserts that the most important thing that people learn from school is the understanding of themselves, their goals and their abilities.

Both the passages have the same argument that learning something is more than just gaining knowledge on the subject. While Thoreau emphasizes on personal experience and experiments to learn any subject, Cory emphasizes on the skills and behaviors that people obtained from going to school.

What is the purpose of attending school or colleges? Most people would think that a person goes to school in order to gain knowledge that would offer him or her a better life in the future. However, that is not exactly true. The attitudes and skills that people gain from education are far more important than the knowledge on a certain subject as stated by Thoreau: “You go to a great school, not for knowledge so much as for arts and habits.” It is the way or process that we obtain knowledge that is more important than merely memorizing a certain fact. To further illustrate, memorizing a particular solution for a mathematical problem will not help a person to solve another similar problem that requires a slightly different approach. Therefore, a person needs to understand the procedures involved in solving a problem.

As a student of an English composition class, I am always required to read arguments written by different authors. If I were to simply memorize and write down the whole argument of an author as my own work, my argument would not be persuasive at all. Instead, I will be accused of plagiarism. The real purpose of reading other arguments by different authors is to learn the way to express our own ideas. However, knowledge can sometimes be important too. For example, without knowing Newton’s law of gravitation, the design of an aircraft will completely fail. Although knowledge can be important, it is far less significant than the skills and attitudes gained from the process of obtaining knowledge.

Next, personal experience. Personal experience is the knowledge that a person can gain by attempting certain actions or experiments. It gives people a different perspective and a better idea on a particular subject. Whether the attempt of proving something succeeds or fails, one will still gain experience from it. In fact, people remember their failed attempts better than their successful attempts. It is from these attempts that people learn that what works and what does not. Colleges today are offering very few opportunities for students in creating their own experiments. Being a senior in Mechanical Engineering in San Jose State University, I find that most if not all laboratory classes that I took have a step by step procedure in every experiment. Also, from my perspective as a student who minors in business, I understand that profit is the priority of any business. To generate greater amount of profits, reducing cost would be a sound plan. During financially troubled times like the economy crisis that is happening now, it is not unusual to see companies lay off their employees as a mean of reducing cost. As a business student, I would think that this act of reducing cost would be the most effective in reducing cost and therefore generates more profits. However, an experienced manager of a company would know that this act of retrenchment might reduce the confidence and loyalty of the employees toward the company. This scenario proves that personal experience can provide a person with a different perspective towards a certain subject and also the importance of gaining personal experience.

Although knowledge can be important in some circumstances, personal experience and the skills and attitudes gained from the process of obtaining knowledge are far more significant. Schools and colleges today should provide more freedom of experimenting in the syllabus of courses for their students as I believe it would help students to be more successful in their lives.

November 3rd, 2008 - 11:46pm

Okay okay... It seems that most of my friends have been MIA from their blogs.. I guess everyone is busy.. hahaa.. But u are all not forgiven! haha.. so.. On November 1st, 2008, due to the incredible crave for MAMAK by Malaysians in San Jose State, MASA SJSU decided to throw a MAMAK NITE to satisfy everyone's crave. It was a hell of a nite.. =)
Take a look at the visual and you might have some idea of err.. the cooking process.. As we as the chefs were running a lil late.. (quite late actually as the event starts at 6pm we started cooking at 6pm.. ahah) I was in charge of cooking Nasi Lemak with beef rendang. It's really easier than I thought..

WIth the instructions clearly stated on the box of the rendang paste.. I basically just need to slice the beef which I found out that I find it difficult.. haha.. So someone helped me out.. Phew.. And walaa.. It tastes pretty good.. You can probably see from the faces of the satisfied customers. ahhaha.. We were supposed to have rojak but it was a total failure cause we couldn't make the right sauce for it.. haha.. But we had Mee Goreng.. Which tastes pretty good too! =)

I know I know.. PPl in Malaysia must be thinking what in the world is wrong with this ppl.. Missing mamak and all.. Try going to a place without mamak for months.. And u will know! haha.. Alrite.. A picture tells a million words.. At least according to my Physics professor. So here it is..

Questions in My head

Questions currently in my head:
1) What am I doing here?
2) Why am I doing this?
3) Where am I doing this?
4) How am I doing this?
5) Last but not least, Who am I?

Well.. This is to remind myself why I am doing all these all the way in the United States.. So.. What actually am I doing here? hmmm.. To err.. gain the power of survival by myself in the future. When there is no one I can depend on.. That's the reason why my parents sent me here? I guess so.. But, the question is.. Can't I just do all these back in Malaysia? What's up with coming all the way here.. Spending a lot more money.. Being alone.. And lost in a bunch of unknown strangers..

Is all these really worth my time? Being away from my parents and friends. From a place where I am most comfortable in.. At least without worries that I have to do my laundry and get my own food and so many other things. I understand this can help me to be more independent and all those craps.. to live in a tough situation and many more.. I understand that.. But isit really necessary to go through all these to gain that strength? Doubtful.. I really don't know..

All these might make no sense.. As I've met ppl who tried to get away from home to avoid seeing their parents.. or just away from home.. It's all weird.. This is such a small matter compared to the bigger picture - the world. I don't know what I can do for the world or even my community. And I wonder anyone is trying to do for the world or just themselves? I can't say that I'm selfless and I wouldn't say that I am not selfish.. It's just the way life is.. We live for ourselves and all we seek for in our lives.. Is for the ultimate benefits of ourselves..

For example, You are studying hard. This is all for urself in the future. showing care and love to someone else.. is just a way for u to get back the same treatment.. As u would expect. The reality might be reflecting that everyone out there is somewhat selfish.. If for a moment you think u are not, think of this: would you rather die for someone that you love, or kill another for someone that you love.. I'm not challenging anyone to do it.. but think bout it. I would say Most but not all will rather kill another than themselves..

Sorry for all these crap.. I dont really know why I have all these crazy thoughts.. But Im just sharing what I think the world is.. and how all the people are acting for themselves.. That is just the way things are.. at least for me..

Hmmm.. Come to think of it.. We are so ermmm. Tiny.. compared to the world.. The chances or probability of one meeting another is pretty small... And I do believe in what is called fate.. which is the chance u get to meet another.. However, People always leave in ur life.. U can take my word for this.. And of course.. New people come in to ur life too.. Just like the cycle of life.. u were born.. grow older.. grow really old.. and dies.. Does it ends there? No one knows.. My point is.. Appreciate the people that is around you that U were offered the fate to meet them.. Someone else out there which probably like the rest of the world don get to meet this guy/girl. Try to be good to everyone.. Because it is better to make another friend than another enemy..

Lastly, Just appreciate that you are alive.. and the people who cares for you.. cause you won't know when They will LEAVE.. i know i know. it's all a cliche..

P.S.: This is not an emo post!

Yours appreciated friend ( i hope )

Here Goes Again!

haha.. Owh.. first thing first.. I reply fast to requests.. haha.. Our Gotbird captain, Joachim Yap has requested for the salted vegetable pork's recipe.. Here you go:

Salted Vegetable Pork cutlet:

Step 1 - Cut skinless pork perferable with some fat.. If you like it la.. into small cutlets. Well, about thumb size I guess.. That would be fine.. Just that it will be cooked faster..

Step 2 - Heat up a frying pan of oil and add in slices ginger and fry it together with minced garlic.

Step 3 - Add in the Salted Vegetable. ( soak it in water for a while before cooking, so that it wouldn't get too salty.. )

Step 4 - Add in sugar and soy sause to taste.

Step 5 - Tadaaaa.. All set.. Served on steamed rice is recommended..

Warning! Boredom alert!

Well.... It's F(!@)*#@ boring! haha.. HAIH... 2 mid terms done.. probably 2 more to go.. alallalala.. Just to spice things up a bit..

Here comes the story.. Sick of describing each and every picture.. THerefore.. I decided to write a whole story of them.. First of all.. I had 2 mid terms in the past week... So.. I did not have time to err clean up my room.. ( althou I would not take the time to clean it up even i have the time.. I know.. its totally lame.. ) So... It was messy.. As u can seee.. So It's dinner time, For some reasons, I had the time to actually cook.. So I decided to fry a fish fillet and errrrr the "salted vegetable pork" * for complete recipe, visit Jian'sRecipe.com * Just kidding.. Okay.. the fish fillet was a totally failure.. as you can see.. it does not resembles any fish at all... the salted vege pork was AWESOME.. well.. maybe its overated but I thought so.. haha.. just forgot to remove the pork skin.. which makes it kinda chewyyyyyyy...

OKOK.. after dinner.. Not really satisfied.. with all the stress due to studying for the mid terms.. I had to eat a SNICKERS ICE CREAM.. So I went over to 7-11 which is just 2 houses away from my place.. Still not satisfied after doing all the frustrating revision.. Went to "FANTASIA CAFE". They claim to be the best milk tea around.. I wonder if that is true.. Their milk tea was... HMMMM a BIT.. better than MAMAK's teh ais.. The pearls were chewy though.. which is not offered in a mamak teh ais.. * Warning! :It would be totally disgusting if u find something chewy in your mamak teh ais * After all that.. I went back to study.. ANd tadaaa... Accounting results was pretty... and heat transfer isnt out yet... Hopefully they all went well.. =/

Thats it for now.. OWH.. wait..

Caution: The moral values that were listed in my previous post are only applicable with applicable situations * if u get what i mean cause i dont. *

Talkin about the Speedo of time..

Woohoo.. I can still recall the time like a few weeks ago.. When I was still studying for my finals back in Malaysia.. I was in my room.. sitting on my white desk and blue chair.. looking at the blue sky.. and the far far stuffs.. Now.. I am back to San Jose and its been like 2 weeks already! Now Im no more studying on my white desk or had to hop into my Blue SLK to drive to college or work.. haha.. How weird this is.. I remember like a few days ago.. when I woke up.. It felt strange.. I think I actually dreamt of home.. haha.. Yea yea.. I guess I miss home.. but well.. ahah.. THe picture was taken back in HK airport.. Look at all the Cathay flights.. haha..

Isn't it amazing how time moves.. It is constantly growing on us.. And we don't even notice it.. SOmetimes.. It gets scary.. There's no stopping to it.. haha.. ANd you know.. Maybe you all don have this fear.. but i do.. As I see my parents, uncles, aunties, all growing older and older.. I just can't avoid from all those thoughts.. But well.. I guess that's life.. Starts with birth.. and ends with death.. Unavoidable.. Now now.. Im just bored here.. That's why decided to write something here.. I read my HandBook for writers and it thought me to freewrite my thoughts.. haha.. It says that it is not required to be organized.. just random thoughts.. =P

Finally, I quoted the following.. Coz I find it quite.. MEANINGFUL and funny too! Enjoy and good nite!

Lesson 1:
A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.' Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'
Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.

Lesson 2:
An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?' The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.' So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
Moral of the story: To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.

Lesson 3:
A turkey was chatting with a bull. 'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.' 'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.' The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.
Moral of the story: Bull Shit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..

Lesson 4:
A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.
Morals of the story:
(1) Not everyone who shits on you is your enemy.
(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

San Jose, California

hmm.. I need an update I guess.. Here I am again. Back in San Jose. Same old place. Same old apartment.. ahah.. everything seemed to be much more familiar than the first time I came here.. I guess I am more comfortable with the place now..Gosh.. Talking about that.. It's so freaking Hot over here! And I mean RED HOT!!! yes.. its like more than 100F outside.. Its crazy hot.. I think that is about 30 + C? let's see.. the formula is (112 - 32) * 5 / 9 = 44C!? hmm.. Not too sure if this is correct.. but trust me.. It's really HOT!!

Talking bout the last weekend before I came back to San Jose.. It was quite.. enjoyable yet.. Suffering.. haha.. I had this incredible lost of appetite on the Sunday morning I think.. Didn't managed to eat anything, but just some porridge.. And I slept from like 11am till 5pm? Later at nite.. I thought I got better and was lying on the sofa watching badminton finals.. Which Lee Chong Wei played against Lin Dan. Half way through the first set, Lee Chong Wei was already struggling to keep up with Lin Dan. Just about that time, my mom kinda asked me to drink up my medicine.. Panadol it is! soluble.. I drank about a quater of it.. AND WOOSH! Everything is rushing up my throat!

And then.. The most disgusting part.. I threw out everything in the toilet.. After that.. I felt really tired and exhausted and went straight to bed.. Ignoring the IMBA badminton match.. ( A new word that I learned in Msia.. IMBA = Imbalanced ) the next morning.. I think I got better.. and started eating again.. but of course.. not fully recovered yet.. bla bla bla.. That's about it.. haha.. Owh yah.. we had a karaoke session before I left.. haha..

My stop at Hong Kong was full of excitement! haha.. from taking the MTR to the hotel.. to Shopping and eating non stop.. the only down side of my stop was that I had to carry my back pack and lap top on the first nite.. It was really really heavy.. My shoulders ache for like 3 days after the stop.. man... But well.. Hong Kong is cool.. Loads of exotic stuffs.. hahaha.. And of course.. CHinese CHICS! LENG LUIS! haha.. lalala. too bad I didn't meet Linda Chung! haha.. There are some pictures taken but its all with my sis.. haah.. will try to post some when i get them.. =P

Finally, back to San jose.. I just purchased a set of speakers on Amazon.com! It's Logitech. which costs me about 30 dollars including shipping.. I thought it was a good deal.. =)
Tadaaa! Here's a look at the speakers..
Hmm.. That's it for now I guess.. Classes this semester aren't that hectic as the last one.. I think I have more free time this time around.. Am only taking 15 units.. haha.. But hopefully I can deal with it with ease! =) till then.. I miss Malaysia! haha..
